The evolution of computing and telecommunications is changing the way we perceive and interact with the world around us. New technologies are creating new ways of performing everyday actions, like reading the daily news or watching television.
Changing Habits
The Internet and rising use of personal computers have altered many of our well-established habits, like the way we use media. Today, we are more likely to read the morning headlines online than in the newspaper at the breakfast table. TiVo and similar technologies allow viewers to watch TV programs on their own schedules and without the nuisance of commercials.
We also multitask much more than we used to: it's now normal for us to watch TV and surf the Internet with music playing in the background. We answer our cell phones as we walk, work, and watch television. "Our research showed that people somehow managed to shoehorn 31 hours of activity into a 24-hour day," said Colleen Fahey Rush, executive vice president for research at MTV Networks. "That's from being able to do two things at once."
New Technology Training
Changes in how we use media require new technologies, and there is rising demand for people who can develop and maintain new IT applications. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, information technology is the fastest-growing sector in the economy, with a projected 68% increase between 2002 and 2012.
If you are looking to contribute to the changing landscape of information technology, or want to take part in the development of new technologies, then it's time to check out some
technology schools. Whether you pursue a degree in
computer systems, programming, network administration, or electronics technology, you'll be on your way to a lucrative career in a rising industry.
