Land Surveying: Your Job as the City's Master Planner

Land surveying is a job that will put your right in the middle of the development of you neighborhood. Land surveyors are professionals that go to proposed building sites and take precise measurements using sophisticated equipment. These calculations are used to find the most equitable use for a plot of land.
Responsibilities of the Land Surveying Professional:
- Boundaries. One of the jobs of traditional land surveyors is to establish official land, air space, and water boundaries.
- Legal Documents. They also write descriptions of land for deeds, leases, and other legal documents; define air space for airports; and measure construction and mineral sites.
- Management. Land surveyors manage survey parties who measure distances, directions, and angles between points and elevations of points.
- Research. Surveyors research legal records, look for evidence of previous boundaries, and analyze the data to determine the location of boundary lines.
If you like to work in the great outdoors, your new career in land surveying comes with a variety of job characteristics that you are sure to love. This is a great profession if you hate the idea of a cubicle or office. Here is a run down of the quality of employment you can expect as a land surveyor.
Job Characteristics of Land Surveying:
- Working Conditions. Surveyors usually work an 8-hour day, 5 days a week, and may spend a lot of time outdoors on the job. Land surveyors and technicians engage in active and sometimes strenuous, work.
- Training. You can earn your credentials through a mixture of postsecondary classes and a great deal of on the job training.
- Job Outlook. Overall employment of surveyors and surveying technicians is expected to grow about as fast as the average for all occupations through the year 2010.
