Choosing a Work at Home Computer Job

By Angelique Gervais

After the birth of my second son, I made the decision to pursue a computer career from my own home. My geographical area does not have many out-of-home computer job opportunities. As a result I put in five years with an employer that had no appreciation for my skills while being forced to place my oldest son in costly daycare.

To say that the situation was less than ideal is an understatement. Like most women, and many men, I felt that my skills were being undervalued and that there had to be a better way to approach my computer career - and my parenting responsibilities.

Get the skills you need with University of Phoenix - the number one choice for working professionals.

How to make it happen

For me, the maternity leave from my second son was a natural time to make the break from working for someone else to having my own computer career - and a home business.

If you’re thinking of the same, all I can say is to make your plan and make your move. I had a lot of abilities, self taught abilities, but little certified training; because of that, my priority was to focus on computer training that would give me the credibility that I needed without taking me from my home.

What I chose to pursue is a combination of modular classes, taken on campus, and online computer training. The focus of my computer training is not a degree, but rather to prepare me for certification testing.

Microsoft offers the MOSC (Microsoft Office Specialist Certification). Adobe has the ACE (Adobe Certified Expert). These are the certificates that I am pursuing.

Is a home computer career a good choice?

I can honestly say that I have not regretted my choice for one second. At times it is trying to work at home with my sons here with me, but as I sit here and write this column I am able to watch them play in the room next to me.

That means that they are able to turn to me for affection, support and guidance whenever they need it. To top it all off, I am working at a computer career for a great boss who really appreciates the work I do!
